Madonna and Christ, Wassily Kandinsky, 1917

This exquisite image of Mary and the Christ Child is one of Kandinsky’s glass paintings. It is small, just 21 cm high and very fragile. You can clearly see where the glass has cracked.
The crack runs through the face of Jesus. It seems to me to add to the image, reminding us that this child is our saviour. He, like the glass, will be broken, and his heavenly body bears the scars of his crucifixion. Still present, but healed and redeemed.
All of us have scars, but they need not diminish our beauty, when redeemed by Christ.
Jesus, Saviour,
I bring to you the scars that I bear,
those that have faded,
and those that are new and raw,
and seek your healing and redemption.
Amen.
